Cathay’s Malay Classic Films Debut on StarHub’s New Cable Channel

Cathay-Keris Films produced over a hundred Malay movies between 1953 to 1973. Its studios then were located along East Coast Road and the genre of films, ranging from romance, comedy, period dramas to horror, were filmed in Singapore and Malaya.

Cathay’s stars such as Maria Menado, Wahid Satay, Rose Yatimah, Ummi Kalthoum, Latiffah Omar, Siput Sarawak, M Amin, Matt Sentol, and Roomai Noor, just to name a few, were household names in the region. 

Cathay is pleased that some of these Malay classics will soon be seen on StarHub’s new cable channel Sensasi, which was made available to viewers in Singapore from 6 August at 7pm, on StarHub Digital Cable channel 40.

Sensasi will screen Cathay’s Malay Classics over 16 Sundays, 9pm to 11pm, beginning from 12 August. Home viewers will enjoy screenings of films such as Bawang Puteh Bawang Merah, Seri Mersing and Raja Bersiong.

And also equally important, create a new awareness through the next generation. Many would not know that Singapore and Cathay in particular, produced its own films and had its own studios along East Coast Road. This is all very much part of Singapore’s heritage and we are glad to have played a role in it.”

The films reflect aspects of our national life and identity, and will certainly lend a dash of local flavour to the buffet spread of programmes on Sensasi.
