Cathay Cineplexes’ Revision of Ticket Pricing

With effect from 31 January 2008, Cathay Cineplexes is revising ticket prices. The tweak comes in the wake of escalating prices in goods, services, labour, film rentals and GST which Cathay Cineplexes has been absorbing. Regrettably these have led to rises in operating costs which Cathay Cineplex is unable to absorb.

Two Tiered Pricing

The revised ticket pricing offers two tiers and will apply at all Cathay Cineplexes. The general ticket prices are upped by 50 cents (a 6% increase) while a new Blockbuster tier has been introduced where tickets to selected movie titles will be increased by an additional 50 cents.

Blockbuster Category

Movie titles which fall under the Blockbuster category will need to satisfy at least two criteria before they can thus be categorized. These conditions include an A-List cast and/or Director, be a part of a successful franchise (examples : Spider-Man, Batman, Shrek, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter etc), have a big production budget of more than US$100 million and opening date in Singapore coinciding with same day and date release in the USA.

As blockbuster titles are seasonal, there will be no more than 20 titles which will carry the Blockbuster rates for the year 2008. In 2007, the industry saw a total of over 320 titles released. It is anticipated that the number of releases for this year will exceed that of the previous year.

Cathay Cineplexes will pre-empt in advance on its directory advertisements, onsite at the cineplexes and on its website, the movie titles under the Blockbuster category at least two weeks before it is released on Cathay’s screens. Iron Man, to be released on 30 April*, will be the first.

Where does the $10 for a ticket go ?

To provide you with an idea of the costs involved in operating a cinema, this is how $10 for a ticket is distributed :

  • GST - $0.70
  • Film Cost Rental - $4.70
  • Operating Expenses (staff costs, utilities, rental of premises, maintenance of equipment & premises, A&P etc) - $3.50

The remaining is profit before tax.

Keeping movie-going affordable

Despite our price revision, movie ticket prices in Singapore are still considered affordable as compared to Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Europe. A movie ticket costs between $12 to as high as S$30 in those countries. And movie going, as family entertainment, continues to be more affordable than other entertainment such as leisure attractions, theme parks, plays or musicals.

In tandem with the revision of ticket prices, promotional packages will be introduced or re-emphasized to cater to senior citizens, students and families. “This is to keep movie-going still affordable for those particular segments, especially for the family and senior citizen markets which have seen little growth. They have not gone to the movies in a while and we are inviting them to revisit with these special rates and packages. So we are keeping our senior citizen’s special rate at $4 per ticket, introducing a new party of 4 package, extending our popular Mom & Tots which is on Tuesdays to Mondays through Fridays and extending our students’ rate across all our cineplexes.” says Chief Executive Officer Mr Suhaimi Rafdi, Cathay Organisation. “And although costs for food and beverage have risen, we are not increasing our food and beverage prices at all Cathay Cineplexes”.
