Jackie Chan’s new period action-comedy film
Coming to Singapore cinemas over CNY 2010
With the exception of the Hollywood production Shanghai Knights in 2003, it has been more than ten years since movie-lovers and fans of Jackie Chan (成龙) got to enjoy his unique brand of Chinese action-comedy meant for the festive Lunar New Year season.
But come February 2010, the international celebrity and director-producer is set to impress Singapore audiences with a new period action-comedy movie, that has stirred up much buzz and excitement within the film industry when it was first unveiled at the recent Cannes Film Festival.
This new China-based, big-budget project, titled Little Big Soldier (大兵小将), is a period flick produced by Jackie Chan and directed by Ding Sheng(丁晟). Starring Jackie Chan himself, Leehom (王力宏), and Lin Peng (林鹏), the movie is set in China’s Warring States era and tells the tale of how a foot soldier and a general from a rival state survive an incredible journey together and learn a lesson from choosing between friendship and freedom. For an interesting twist, veteran actor Jackie Chan plays the minor foot soldier, while the younger Leehom takes on the role of an honourable general and courageous warrior.
The idea of Little Big Soldier has been brewing in Jackie Chan’s mind since 20 years ago, until the 2008 action comedy The Underdog Knight (硬汉) directed by Ding Sheng caught his attention and he decided to have Ding direct Little Big Soldier.
The result of this fresh combination brings a beautifully-shot action epic film filled with intense war scenes and peppered with black humour tailored to Jackie Chan’s trademark comedic effects, offering a breath of fresh air to the recent line-up of popular Chinese period films such as Red Cliff (赤壁) and The Warlords (投名状).
Distributed by Cathay-Keris Films, Little Big Soldier is scheduled to come onto the big screens in Singapore in February 2010 over the Chinese New Year period.
